Approved / Problematic Devices for Campus Use

With students living, working, and learning on campus, the ability to utilize technology for day-to-day life is less of a blessing and more of a necessity. Over the years, due to our intentionality to provide the best service possible, ITS has tested several hundred (if not thousand) devices for use on our campus and has come up with a list of recommended or known problematic devices to help students (and parents) in deciding what to bring and not bring.

Printing

ITS provides centralized printing options at various locations around campus. However, we know that sometimes having a printer right in your room is a wonderful convenience and we encourage anybody who is interested to feel free to bring a printer to campus. However, there are a few things that we’ve found that would help you in deciding what you should and shouldn’t bring.

Should

  • Wired Printers (connecting via USB or Ethernet)

  • Wireless Printers that can have “direct wireless” disconnected

Shouldn’t

Wifi-only printers

Printers that broadcast a wireless signal (Direct Connect) to pair and print to

After testing, these three models are verified and recommended by the ITS department as “campus friendly” and should be fine to bring to and use on campus. As of this publication (9/28/23) these printers are all compatible and under $100.

Smart Devices

As technology has advanced over the last decade, the introduction and prevalence of Smart devices have continued to grow as has the number of devices brought to MVNU’s campus. Here are some known good and bad devices
