Using Remote.mvnu.edu

For certain courses, the business department requires the use of two primary applications that are Windows-specific and can cause difficulties for students who own and operate Apple computers. In an attempt to provide a solution for these courses, ITS has created a virtual instance of a computer experience for various applications through the web.

As you can see in the above image, users who are able to sign in to remote.mvnu.edu will have access to various Microsoft applications that can be utilized on an Apple Device. This article is to provide a step-by-step guide for accessing these programs, using them with Moodle, and any known frequently asked questions.

Accessing Windows-only programs

If you are an Apple user and have been asked to do coursework using:

  • Microsoft Access

  • Microsoft Publisher

You can utilize remote.mvnu.edu to use these applications through the web rather than having them installed on your computer.

Requirements

The following tools are necessary to utilize this resource:

  • Internet Access - since this resource is provided through the web, permanent access to the internet is required.

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop - available on the app store or by clicking this link, you can download and install the software package that allows you to remotely access a Windows computer.

  • Moodle Access - Most assignments will be provided through Moodle as the online classroom. These courses provide regular example files for class which require the software to open (see below example).

How to:

Open a remote App

  1. Visit remote.mvnu.edu

  2. Log in with the following:

    1. Username “AD\*****” place your username (without the @mvnu.edu) where the ***** is

    2. Password - your MVNU password (you use to log in to email or moodle)

  3. Once signed in successfully, click the application you’d like to use (which will download a file)

  4. Once downloaded, open the file.

    1. This should open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app (see below icon)

  5. This should open Microsoft Access in an internet window.

Open a file from Moodle in a remote App

  1. In Moodle, Download the file to your Mac.

  2. Once downloaded, right-click on the file and select "Copy"

  3. Log in to the application via remote.mvnu.edu

  4. Once in the program, click "Open Other Files" on the left-hand column

  5. Click "Browse" in the middle column

  6. It should open the Windows equivalent of a "Finder window" and you should be able to click "Ctrl+V" to paste the copied file there.

  7. Assuming that worked, select the file and click "Open"

Save a file from the remote app to Moodle

  1. In the remote App, click “Save As”

  2. Choose a file name and remember the location listed.

  3. Click “Save”

  4. Click the “File” tab at the top of the App bar.

  5. Click “Open”

  6. Select “Browse” from the middle column

  7. It should open the Windows equivalent of a "Finder window" and you should be able right-click and choose “Copy” or you can type "Ctrl+C" to copy the saved file.

  8. Minimize the App window and open Finder

  9. Navigate to the folder you’d like to save the file and once there right-click and select paste, or type “Cmd+V”.

  10. The file should now be on your computer and you can upload it to Moodle as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

In our experience, because of how this remote application was installed, OneDrive provides an error when attempting to log in to it.

Yes, you can visit the Windows computer lab in the Jetter building when class is not in session to use a windows computer with the necessary Application installed on it.

Three possible problems:

  1. You have to include “AD\” before your username in order to sign in.

  2. You typed your password incorrectly.

  3. You have not been given the necessary permissions to access the website. In this case, please contact the ITS department and we can work with your professor to ensure you can get in.
